## About the ASVAB

### SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ASVAB?

“The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery” [ASVAB] is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command and used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States armed forces. It is often offered to American high school students when they are in the 10th, 11th and 12th grade, though anyone eligible for enlistment may take it.

## Why use Xamonline for studying the ASVAB?

• The ASVAB Study Guide covers the ten subtests on the ASVAB: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, General Science, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, Shop Information, Auto Information, and Assembling Objects. Each chapter starts with the basics and covers the core topics that you are most likely to see on the test.
• This study guide puts an emphasis on the four subtests that are used to compute the AFQT score: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. The AFQT score is critical because you must have a minimum qualifying score in order to enlist in the military.
• The Word Knowledge chapter covers strategies for determining the meaning of words. By learning skills like using root words and prefixes, you’ll learn how to identify synonyms and antonyms of words. The Paragraph Comprehension chapter helps increase your comprehension skills. You’ll learn about understanding the main idea of a passage, identifying supporting details, making inferences, and more.
• The Arithmetic Reasoning chapter is all about word problems. You’ll learn how to solve word problems involving variables, fractions, percents, and probability. The Mathematics Knowledge chapter covers a wide range of mathematical concepts from finding cube roots to solving an inequality.
• In the General Science chapter, you’ll learn about concepts like the periodic table, kinetic energy, heat transfer, plate tectonics, biological classification, and ecology. The Mechanical Comprehension chapter covers the principles of mechanics, simple machines, and machine components. The Electronics Information chapter covers the fundamentals of electronics, terminology, basic circuits, electronic components, and motors.
• The Shop Information chapter covers tools and basic shop practices. You’ll learn about tools like mallets, pipe wrenches, hacksaws, and calipers. The Auto Information chapter includes everything from alternators and disk brakes to oil changes and tire maintenance.
• The Assembling Objects chapter covers connecting labeled parts and assembling puzzle pieces. You will practice visualizing how pieces fit together to create new objects.
• This study guide includes study tips and test-taking tips, including specific tips about each subtest. There are practice test questions throughout each chapter, and at the end of the book, there is a 200-question practice test, which includes questions in the same format as the actual exam.
